SMO Contemporary Collaborates with Christopher Samuel Idowu on Community Initiative

SMO Contemporary Art was proud to collaborate with Christopher Samuel Idowu on Diary of a Sojourner: A Memory Box Between Spaces, a community-centred art project that demonstrates the transformative power of artistic collaboration, cultural exchange, and collective storytelling.
The project evolved from My Benue Diary, a site-specific exhibition presented within an abandoned fertilizer repository in Benue State, the very landscape that inspired Christopher's reflections on memory, belonging, resilience, and hope.
Rooted in his experiences during the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme in an agrarian community, the work draws from the lives of students and farming families whose stories became integral to the project's development.
Supported by the Prince Claus Seed Award, Diary of a Sojourner expanded beyond its original context, connecting communities in Badagry and Benue through a shared creative journey. Through drawing, painting, printmaking, papermaking, storytelling, sound, video, installation, and performance, participants were invited to explore personal and collective histories while contributing to a growing archive of memories and experiences.
More than a series of workshops or exhibitions, the project fostered spaces for dialogue, mentorship, and collaboration. Each phase concluded with an interactive, site-responsive exhibition that encouraged co-creation and communal reflection, demonstrating how art can strengthen relationships, preserve cultural memory, and inspire meaningful social engagement.
