Sam Ebohon was born November 30, 1970, in Lagos to Edo-Benin parents. He graduated in 1990 with an HND (Higher National Diploma) from the prestigious Yaba College of Technology.
Ebohon's canvases are vaguely reminiscent of the Futurists as evidenced by his virtuoso brushwork, which creates blurred out-of-focus imagery that conveys a feeling of fluid movement and the sublimity of African art.
The fractured sense of perspective also betrays the influence of Cubism—the geometric shapes, pointedly drawn from traditional African sculpture, fractured planes and bold colours resolving into naturalistic forms that seek to define human existence in various thematic and social contexts. As if seen through a glass prism, his subjects strike a fine balance between technique and visual drama—the hallmark of his art.
In 2009, Ebohon was awarded the Gold Medal Prize at the Caterina de Medici painting competition in Florence Italy. In 2017, Ebohon served as the fourth president of the Guild of Professional Fine Artists of Nigeria (GFA) and is a senior member of the Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA).
His paintings can be found in local and international art galleries and collections. He has also participated in several exhibitions including Open Secrets, Rele Gallery, Lagos, Nigeria (2016); Shades of Value, Terra Kulture, Lagos, Nigeria (2008); Exhibition of African Art, Nairobi, Kenya (2019); Impact, Hour Glass Gallery (2020); Mutual Art Inspiration, Zoetermeer, Netherlands (2016); The Lost Pictures, Los Angeles, USA (2011); and Galerie Vendome, Paris; Hellenic Images, Greek Embassies in Lagos and Abuja, Nigeria (2007).
