Gerry Nnubia Nigerian, b. 1966

Gerry Nnubia was born in Enugu in 1966. He graduated from Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu with a Higher National Diploma in fine art (1988). From 1989 to 1990, he taught briefly at Auchi Polytechnic before settling into an active studio practice and becoming a fixture on the burgeoning Lagos exhibition circuit.

A 10-year period of hibernation resulted in his discovery of the “Acrylic Flow”, in which he exhibits a near-total disregard for generally accepted conventions and techniques of practice. Nnubia’s technique involves the skillful manipulation of his medium to a liquid viscous flow often assimilating accidental occurrences and temperature adjustments, depending on the effect sought. Here, the artist offers critical possibilities for painting, and explores the tensions between form and formlessness vital to the tenets of modernism. A largely experimental artist, Gerry Nnubia’s more recent work includes collages that conflate time and space while his canvases interrogate migration and identity as well as explore the beauty of nature and filial bonds.

He has exhibited extensively and his works have been loaned to the highly esteemed Du Sable Museum of Black American History, in Chicago. They can also be found in several important collections locally and internationally including Total and Access Bank.
