Joshua Nmesirionye is a Nigerian contemporary artist who was born on April 21, 1968 in Umuahia, Abia State, shortly after the start of the Nigerian civil war. He acquired a National Diploma (ND) in General Art and a Higher National Diploma (HND) from the prestigious Federal Polytechnic Auchi, Edo State, in 1996 and 1998 respectively. Nmesirionye was also trained by the poignant visual storyteller, Abiodun Olaku. He is a studio artist and a member of the Universal Studios of Arts, Iganmu, Lagos. He is also a member of the Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA) and the Guild of Fine Artists of Nigeria (GFA).
Nmesirionye’s art is informed by human forms, rich landscapes, faces and his deepest imaginations. He works with a variety of media, from Conté to acrylic and oil paint. Working on textured canvas, Nmesirionye creates a visual experience that uses abstract forms and realistic subjects. His art is expressionist, flickering between spiritual themes made evident in his paintings “Scarlet Moves” (2011), “In the Spirit'' (2011), and “Hybrid Pose” (2011). Nmesirionye’s works dazzle, taking on a life of their own with colourful exuberance.
His works have been included in a variety of solo and group exhibitions, some of which include “LEGACY” (Universal Studios of Art, Lagos, 2021); “La Floraison” (Alexis Galleries, Victoria Island, Lagos, 2019); “Mutual Art Inspiration” (Zoetermeer, Netherlands, 2016); “Colours of Hope” (Lagos, Nigeria, 2014); “The Lost Pictures” (Los Angeles, USA, 2011); Terrakulture (Lagos, Nigeria, 2011); “Stepping into Universality” (Lagos, Nigeria, 2009); “In Due Season” (Mydrim Gallery, Lagos, Nigeria, 2009); “Rejuvenation”(Lagos, Nigeria, 2005).
