Prudence Chimutuwah (b.1989) is an emerging contemporary visual artist from Harare, Zimbabwe who seeks to challenge the traditional and often limiting narrative surrounding women through her work. Her mixed media collages fuse decommissioned Zimbabwe banknotes, printed African textiles, and acrylic paints on canvas to create pieces that depict women in confident poses of power and affluence. Chimutuwah’s work is not only visually striking, but it also seeks to change the tired narrative around women, which is often propagated from a male perspective as ideals of piety.
Chimutuwah holds a Visual Arts and Design certificate with the National Gallery of Zimbabwe Visual Arts School, where she honed her skills and developed a passion for mixed media collage. She has exhibited at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe as a solo artist and has also participated in several group shows. In 2021, Chimutuwah was selected to participate in a residency at Greatmore Studios, South Africa, which provided her with the opportunity to further develop her artistic skills and expand her creative network. She was also a part of a boot camp for Young Contemporary Artists in Nigeria, where she received mentorship and guidance from established artists in the industry.
