SMO Contemporary Art is delighted to present stirring portraits by two exceptional artists, Patrick Akpojotor and Deborah Segun, who present the human experience through spectacular geometric forms and colors for this year’s 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, London edition.
Patrick Akpojotor's architectural renderings have an identity and memory which come alive in the spaces he creates, reflecting the personality of their inhabitants. His portraits embody internal and external emotional architecture, which reflect the multi-layered pressures of life in a mega-city, which make a deep imprint on the psychology of communities and the spaces they inhabit.
Deborah Segun on the other hand, embraces the female form by painting clear planes of color and expression, exploring critical issues surrounding life, death and re-generation, and the different stages of grief. Her stylized portraits and graceful, unaffected poses present a truthful, vulnerable essence, in voluptuous defiance.
Both artists draw us into a deep and fresh connection with what lies beneath the gaze, the pose, and layers of outer adornment, and expose the core of the human experience in all its beauty and raw emotion.
